Hellenic Police Enhance Protection After Protests Against Israeli Passenger Liner

Greek officials have significantly increased safety arrangements at multiple key harbors in an initiative to keep protesters from approaching a cruise liner transporting Israeli tourists on an 11-day Mediterranean journey.

Recent Demonstrations Prompt Enhanced Protection

The heightened security at Patras and Katakolo was implemented following recent demonstrations when the MS Crown Iris made port in Kalamata recently. Earlier, passengers aboard the same vessel were prevented from disembarking and the ship was forced to divert to Cyprus after community members organized demonstrations on the Aegean isle of Syros.

"Despite the peace agreement, Israel is still continuing its attacks in Gaza," stated a schoolteacher who joined the Kalamata rally. "Innocent, unarmed people are being fatally injured."

Tourist Encounter and Public Opinion

From the upper deck, passengers witnessed as crowds in Kalamata yelled: "You require the police, you're not welcome in Greece."

A leading campaigner, who worked throughout summer arranging anti-war protests across Greece, stated: "Citizens of Israel who support the actions of their administration aren't accepted here."

Geopolitical Context and Foreign Relations

Constantine Filis noted: "Due to geographic proximity and our traditional ties with the Arab world, the average Greek is more attuned to what is occurring in Gaza than the average central or north European."

"The Hellenic Republic is in a challenging situation," he added. "Israel is much more important for us as an associate than it is for many European nations."

Commercial and Travel Consequences

Official data reveal that more than 600,000 Israeli visitors visited Greece in 2024, with estimates of greater tourism this year. This significant arrival highlights the significantly enhanced ties between the two nations since the 1980s, when Greek leadership maintained a staunchly pro-Palestinian stance.

Tactical Partnership and Regional Factors

From Athens' perspective, Israel constitutes not only a crucial counterweight to neighboring competitor Turkey but also grants the supplementary bonus of improved diplomatic access to Washington.

"The Hellenic Republic is not going to jeopardize its ties with Israel," stated Filis. "However from a ethical standpoint we must be more inclusive, more equitable, more committed to show the wrongdoings of Israel in Gaza."

Growing Protest Movement and Global Response

The scale of the Greek demonstration campaign has clearly taken Israel aback. In recent months, the country's foreign ministry warned tourists to maintain a low profile, while national news outlets referred to Athens as a "former paradise" due to political graffiti emerging on edifices in the urban center.

The head official of the Jewish Community Leadership in Greece expressed concern: "Naturally we're anxious. The type of language we're encountering can quickly turn into antisemitic."

Upcoming Developments and Requests

Increasingly, critics have focused on Athens' close ties with Israel. Up to 5,000 people recently journeyed to Crete to call for the shutdown of the Souda Bay naval base, a NATO establishment that since the outbreak of war in Gaza has served as a key refuelling post for US aircraft carriers, fighter planes and boats bound for Israel.

"We have achieved successes," declared a movement organizer. "Our main demand, currently, is to cease all cooperation with Israel."
