Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to contest specific decisions made by the official, following the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
